The Slim Box from Hyun Won is a cool-looking, ultra compact 128 Mb digital audio player, that supports MP3, WMA and has an FM tuner. The Slim Box is a new version of the popular Ultra Slim MP3 Player from Hyun Won. The key difference is the addition of an FM tuner, which is great for those who bore easily of their MP3 files. As with most current MP3 players, this player reads WMA files as well as having MP3 encoding (the ability to record a source direct to an MP3 file). Not only do you get a Ni-MH battery that provides just over 8 hours battery life, you also get an attachment case for an AAA battery in case the original battery runs out inconveniently. The Slim Box is also provided with a remote control that supports the most commonly needed functions, and a small carry case. The build quality of this MP3 player is outstanding. It has an attractive metallic casing and the detailing and button weight are just right. The only slight drawback is that the screen could have benefitted from being a bit bigger. However, due to the diminutive stature of this player it is doubtful whether anyone will be spending much time looking at the screen, as it will spend most of its time tucked away inconspicuously in shirt and trouser pockets. Without the additional battery case attached the Slim Box is smaller in surface area than a credit card and measures just 9.4 mm thick. MP3 playback is of high quality and you get seven equaliser modes, two of which are user defined. The FM tuner works very well, a pleasant surprise for an MP3 player. You also have the option of recording direct from the radio to catch your favourite tunes as well as programming in up to 10 preset frequencies. The instruction manual is comprehensive and doesn't suffer from heavy mistranslation--as seen on many of the budget MP3 players. The software provided is also straightforward to use. Hyun Won has made a beautiful little player here that should be at the top of anyone's MP3 shopping list. --Nick Baxter |
